Things are a bit different this time around. Here we have a dopey looking Mario and Luigi discover that Bowser has once again kidnapped the princess. Upon booting up Hotel Mario we’re treated to what can only be described as one of the cheesiest and worst fully animated sequences in video game history. Today we’re going to take a look at Hotel Mario so let’s dive right into our review! Hotel Mario is one of the only non-educational titles in the franchise to not be ported anywhere else. In exchange Phillips could commission development of games for the CD-i platform using the company’s classic franchises. It was the product of a deal between Nintendo and Phillips to design and release the CD attachment to the Super Nintendo. All these are not particularly liked among the fans (and even Nintendo themselves), most often citing the poor voice acting and crudely animated graphics.Hotel Mario is one of the few titles in the franchise not developed (or even published) by Nintendo. This and the unreleased Super Mario's Wacky Worlds (CDI) were developed by Philips after they acquired the rights to use Nintendo's licensed characters as a result of an experimental partnership for a cancelled SNES CD add-on, which also led to the creation of three Zelda-themed titles. Even though the level design and the visual atmosphere vary throughout the game, the gameplay remains exactly the same. Moving between the five storeys can be done by taking elevators using the Up and Down buttons in order to hide from enemies and avoid taking damage. Bowser takes over the Mushroom Kingdom, hides the princess in one of the seven hotels that he claimed there and the plumber duo is once again tasked to save her by going through all of these.Įach stage involves shutting a certain amount of doors while pouncing enemies along the way that try to prevent them from staying closed, all without exceeding the time limit. Hotel Mario is a single-screen platformer. For other games in the series, see Super Mario Bros.
